Climate experts get key US posts

Prof John Holdren (file image)

Mr Holdren says climate change is already causing widespread harm

US President-elect Barack Obama has nominated two leading global warming specialists for key science posts in his administration.

Harvard physicist John Holdren will be Mr Obama’s scientific adviser while marine biologist Jane Lubchenco will head the US oceanic research body.

Both have advocated greater government action on climate change.

Their appointments have been seen as a sign of Mr Obama’s commitment to tackling environmental issues.

In his weekly address, Mr Obama said that “today, more than ever before, science holds the key to our survival as a planet and our security and prosperity as a nation”.

He said it was “time we once again put science at the top of our agenda” and that he was confident that the US could “lead the world into a new future of peace and prosperity”.

‘Respectful’

Mr Holdren was described by Mr Obama as “one of the most passionate and persistent voices of our time about the growing threat of climate change”.

Jane Lubchenco

Ms Lubchenco has criticised the Bush administration’s scientific policies

He has said that climate change is already causing widespread harm and has called for a more robust government response.

Mr Holdren will become director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the co-chair of the Council of Advisers on Science and Technology.

He will share the latter post with Nobel Prize-winning scientist Harold Varmus and Eric Lander, a specialist in human genome research.

Mr Lander’s appointment has been seen as an indication of Mr Obama’s willingness to break from President George Bush’s resistance to genetic research.

Meanwhile, Ms Lubchenco will direct the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which monitors global weather patterns and ocean currents.

She had criticised the Bush administration earlier this year for not being “respectful” of science.

“I am very much looking forward to a new administration that does respect scientific information and that considers it very seriously in making environmental policies,” she said.

Mr Obama, who takes office on 20 January, has now filled all the posts in the cabinet. However all nominees must still be vetted and approved by the Senate.

Gore's tough message to leaders

Gore’s tough message to leaders

By Richard Black
Environment correspondent, BBC News website, Poznan

AP)

Al Gore was optimistic about some developing countries’ plans

Leaders will have to embrace tougher targets on reducing emissions if they want to prevent dangerous climate change, according to Al Gore.

Speaking here at the UN climate conference, the former US presidential candidate said the “sclerotic” politics of today had to change.

His speech was met with rapturous applause by thousands of delegates.

But environmental groups here criticised the EU’s climate and energy package, agreed earlier in Brussels.

EU leadership is widely seen as vital in clinching a global deal at the next UN conference in Copenhagen in a year’s time; and campaigners say European governments have concluded a weak agreement.

But Mr Gore, who won last year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change, said he saw more reasons for optimism than pessimism.

“To those who say it’s too difficult to conclude a deal by Copenhagen, I say it can be done, it will be done, let’s finish this process.”

Why would anyone listen to this lying, manipulating, dishonest, mouthpiece for the UN New World Order. He and his mentor Maurice Strong along with a cabal of elitists and phony environmental groups intend to destroy our economies in order to gain complete control of the planet and everything on it.

What’s  going on in the economy is not by chance or some unforeseen accident.

Biofuels emissions may be 'worse than petrol

February 7, 2008

Biofuels emissions may be ‘worse than petrol’

Biofuels, once seen as a useful way of combating climate change, could actually increase greenhouse gas emissions, say two major new studies.

And it may take tens or hundreds of years to pay back the “carbon debt” accrued by growing biofuels in the first place, say researchers. The calculations join a growing list of studies questioning whether switching to biofuels really will help combat climate change.

Biofuel production has accelerated over the last 5 years, spurred in part by a US drive to produce corn-derived ethanol as an alternative to petrol.

The idea makes intuitive environmental sense – plants take up carbon dioxide as they grow, so biofuels should help reduce greenhouse gas emissions – but the full environmental cost of biofuels is only now becoming clear.

Extra emissions are created from the production of fertiliser needed to grow corn, for example, leading some researchers to predict that the energy released by burning ethanol is only 25% greater than that used to grow and process the fuel.

Carbon debt

The new studies examine a different part of biofuel equation, and both suggest that the emissions associated with the crops may be even worse than that.

One analysis looks at land that is switched to biofuel crop production. Carbon will be released when forests are felled or bush cleared, and longer-term emissions created by dead roots decaying.

This creates what Joseph Fargione of The Nature Conservancy and colleagues call a “carbon debt”. Emissions savings generated by the biofuels will help pay back this debt, but in some cases this can take centuries, suggests their analysis.

If 10,000 square metres of Brazilian rainforest is cleared to make way for soya beans – which are used to make biodiesel – over 700,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide is released.

The saving generated by the resulting biodiesel will not cancel that out for around 300 years, says Fargione. In the case of peat land rainforest in Indonesia, which is being cleared to grow palm oil, the debt will take over 400 years to repay, he says.

Missing corn

The carbon debts associated with US corn are measured in tens rather than hundreds of years. But the second study suggests that producing corn for fuel rather than food could have dramatic knock-on effects elsewhere.

Corn is used to feed cattle and demand for meat is high, so switching land to biofuel production is likely to prompt farmers in Brazil and elsewhere to clear forests and other lands to create new cropland to grow the missing corn.

When the carbon released by those clearances is taken into account, corn ethanol produces nearly twice as much carbon as petrol.

Global Warming the Fraud Continues in 2008

January 9, 2008

2008 will be the year that the climate alarmists will be discredited
Media Promotes Global Warming Alarmism by Jack Kelly at RealClearPolitics via Yahoo News:

About this time last year, Dr. Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit of East Anglia University in Britain, predicted 2007 would be the warmest year on record.

It didn’t turn out that way. 2007 was only the 9th warmest year since global temperature readings were first made in 1861.

2007 was also the coldest year of this century, noted Czech physicist Lubos Motl.

Both global warming alarmists like Dr. Jones and skeptics like Dr. Motl forecast that this year will be slightly cooler than last year. If so, that means it will be a decade since the high water mark in global temperature was set in 1998.

And the trend line is down. Average global temperature in 2007 was lower than for 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2001. November of last year was the coldest month since January of 2000, and December was colder still. “Global warming has stopped,” said David Whitehouse, former science editor for the BBC. “It’s not a viewpoint or a skeptic’s inaccuracy. It’s an observational fact.”

But observational fact matters little to global warming alarmists, particularly to those in the news media. “In 2008, your television will bring you image after image of natural havoc linked to global warming,” said John Tierney, who writes a science column for the New York Times. “You will be told that such bizarre weather must be a sign of dangerous climate change — and that these images are a mere preview of what’s in store unless we act quickly to cool the planet.”

“Global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter,” said Steven Guibeault of Greenpeace. There is no dispute among scientists that the planet warmed about 0.3 degrees Celsius between 1980 and 1998. What is in dispute is what caused the warming, and whether it will continue. The alarmists say the warming was caused chiefly by emissions of carbon dioxide from our automobiles and factories, and that, consequently, it will continue at an ever increasing rate unless we humans change our behavior. The skeptics say the warming trend was caused chiefly by natural cycles, and that it is at or near its end.

“The earth is at the peak of one of its passing warm spells,” said Dr. Oleg Sorokhtin of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. It’ll start getting cold by 2012, and really, really cold around 2041, he predicts.

The news media promote global warming alarmism through selective reporting. Dr. Roger Pielke of the University of Colorado noted that a paper published in an obscure scientific journal that argued there was a link between hurricanes and global warming generated 79 news articles, while a paper that debunked the connection published in a far more prestigious journal generated only three.

“When the Arctic sea ice last year hit the lowest level ever recorded by satellites, it was big news and heralded as a sign the planet was warming,” Mr. Tierney wrote. “When the Antarctic sea ice last year reached the highest level ever recorded by satellites, it was pretty much ignored.”

Two studies published last year which indicated the melting of Arctic sea ice was due more to cyclical changes in ocean currents and winds than to planetary warming also attracted little attention, Mr. Tierney noted.

And though the record melting of Arctic sea ice this summer was widely reported, the record growth of Arctic sea ice this fall (58,000 square miles of ice each day for 10 straight days) was not.

More than 400 scientists — many of them members of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — challenge the claims of the leading global warming alarmist, former Vice President and now Nobel laureate Al Gore, said a report issued by the Republicans on the U.S. Senate’s Environment and Public Works committee last month. Kailee Kreider, a spokeswoman for Mr. Gore, said there criticisms should be discounted because 25 or 30 of the scientists may have received funding from the Exxon Mobil Corp.

It’s Mr. Gore who is the crook, says French physicist Claude Allegre in a new book. He’s made millions in an eco-business based on phony science, Dr. Allegre charges.

Mr. Gore isn’t alone, says Weather Channel founder John Coleman: “Some dastardly scientists with environmental and political motives manipulated long term scientific data to create an illusion of rapid global warming,” Mr. Coleman wrote. “Their friends in government steered huge research grants their way to keep the movement going…In time, in a decade or two, the outrageous scam will be obvious.”

Kangaroo Farts Save Planet Earth

December 6, 2007

From the Editor
I have already booked my flight to Australia to get some kangaroo bacteria put into my stomach. It’s a win win situation for me and the world in general. I will be able to travel anywhere in the world by whatever mode of transportation I choose, knowing I will be offsetting my carbon emissions every time I fart. If you really want to do your part to save the world from GLOBAL WARMING contact me and I will sell you some kangaroo bacteria. Every time you fart you can smile knowing you are helping to save Planet Earth.

I just farted and yes I’m smiling

But  I refuse to  smile about the devastation caused  by the wind industry and truly stunned govt. officials.

Kangaroo farts used in global warming battle

Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in a bid to cut the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroos’ flatulence contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas.

Scientific literature shows that in addition to creating greenhouse gases, cow farts are linked to at least three deaths due to smokers lighting up in sheds and barns where flatulating cattle were being housed.

While the debate over coal fired power stations rages, research has also shown that cows and sheep can contribute between 14-5% of a country’s methane emissions, which are just as large a contributor to global warming as CO2.

Biofuels 'crime against humanity'

October 29, 2007

Food prices have risen as more land is used to produce biofuels

A United Nations expert has condemned the growing use of crops to produce biofuels as a replacement for petrol as a crime against humanity.

The UN special rapporteur on the right to food, Jean Ziegler, said he feared biofuels would bring more hunger.

The growth in the production of biofuels has helped to push the price of some crops to record levels.

Mr Ziegler’s remarks, made at the UN headquarters in New York, are clearly designed to grab attention.

He complained of an ill-conceived dash to convert foodstuffs such as maize and sugar into fuel, which created a recipe for disaster.

Food price rises

It was, he said, a crime against humanity to divert arable land to the production of crops which are then burned for fuel.

He called for a five-year ban on the practice.

OMB Hearing Starts in Kincardine Ontario(updated July 19th)

April 30, 2007

“The People” vs the Municipality of Kincardine, the Ontario Government and Enbridge.

A small group of landowners are in for the fight of their lives. It has been said that this hearing will set the stage for the future of wind farm development in Ontario.

Today was the first day of the hearing and most of the day was spent figuring out process and time lines. Over the next seven or eight weeks testimony will be heard from people in Ontario and Nova Scotia who have had their lives ruined by the wind turbines near their homes. Setbacks will be questioned as well as noise levels. This small group of people is fighting not just for themselves, but for everyone who is threatened by a wind farm in their neighborhood.

The d’Etremont family of Nova Scotia was driven from their home by the wind turbines. A special thanks to Daniel for making the trip to the OMB hearing in Kincardine Ont. to share his story, in the hope that what happened to his family won’t be repeated.

Update 3 May 15th

Update 4 May 29th

Update 5 May 29th

OMB Decision Filed July 16th 2007-A very bad day for the people of Ontario. Everybody must continue too fight this McGuntiy Govt. and their ridiculous energy policy.

Kingsbridge l wind farm

Kingsbridge l wind farm just north of Goderich Ontario

If you followed the wind farm saga you will know that the story is the same everywhere in the world. Agents show up at the door of farmers or rural landowners offering money for their help to create clean renewable energy for the future of the county and their children. Before they know it they have signed a lease for up to twenty years.

Next get the local politicians involved and tell them how a wind farm in their area will create lots of high paying jobs and be a great source of tax dollars.

The last to find out are the people who will be affected by the wind farm. Both the politicians and the wind company assure the people that there will be no problems.

A little research and people are alerted to all kinds of negative effects like noise, flicker, sleep disturbance and property devaluation.

They go to council with their research in hand but it is ignored. They are again assured there will be no problems and that having a wind farm will create jobs, tax dollars and help solve the global warming problem. At this point peoples lives are put on hold while they continue to try and convince their council to look at the well documented problems that can and do occur. Most times they leave shaking their heads and wondering why their council can’t see the obvious.

It’s about the money and they are more than prepared to sacrifice you and your property to get it

The real truth about wind farms and wind energy is quite simple

. Take most anything they tell you and flip it 180 degrees and you have the truth

A wind farm in your area will creates lots of high paying jobs. Flip that statement 180 degrees and you have the truth.

Wind turbines are quiet. Flip that statement 180 degrees and you have the truth.

You get the idea.

So for the next seven or eight weeks they are going to fight this fight and they intend to win.

To all those fighting the scourge of wind farms around the globe, Don’t Ever Give Up.Your support is appreciated

Canada’s dumbest politician
By LORRIE GOLDSTEIN

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a surprise winner for the stupidest comment ever made by a Canadian politician about the environment. We know a lot of you were expecting it would be Stephen Harper, John Baird, Stephane Dion or a member of the Alberta legislature.

But our winner is Dwight Duncan, Ontario’s energy minister, who says Ontario’s Liberal government won’t install scrubbers on the smokestacks of its coal-fired electricity generating stations — among Canada’s, and North America’s, worst emitters of air pollution and greenhouse gases.

As Duncan put it: “We’re not going to spend $1.6 billion on technology that doesn’t help climate change. That’s just dumb.”

Actually, Mr. Duncan, what you’ve just said is dumb. It’s so dumb that whenever anyone looks up “dumb” in the dictionary, there should be a picture of you.
